Aronia plant is a large genus of deciduous shrubs, the common chokecherry, in the family Rosaceae and more commonly found growing in wet fields and swamps in eastern North America. The genus is believed to contain several species, one of which has been naturalized in Europe. There are nearly sixty recognized natural species of this plant from four continents. This tree is often referred to by botanists as “wild root” because it forms a large percentage of the arid grasslands of its geographic region. Wild rootless plants are common in parts of Mexico, Central America, and Africa.
Botanists believe that Aronia was taken to North America by settlers after crossing the Rockies via steamships headed for the new world. Over the years the plant has made a rather comfortable home in the eastern part of the continent, even taking over a whole section of what used to be known as the Mississippi valley. This means that some of the plants native to the Americas have mixed genetic material with those of the Aronia berry. This combination of genes allowed some of the native species of Aronia to develop fruit while the shrub was able to grow berries. Because of this marriage of organism and plant, the resulting plant is often referred to as Aronia berry.
Traditionally, the Greeks and the Romans enjoyed the tasty leaves of this helpful plant along with fresh fruit from the trees. In addition, there were a variety of useful medicines which were made from the pulp. In fact, the earliest archaeological evidence of using the juices of Aronia comes from twenty-five thousand years ago in Egypt. The juice was used to wash the feet and the inside of the ears of infants, who were supposed to receive protection from illness and disease from the natural oils in the fruits.
