Aronia – The Fountain of Youth?

Aronia has been one of the world’s best known and best liked herbs for thousands of years. For many generations, every herbalist, spice manufacturer, cookbook writer, and herbal healer knew that Aronia was among the best herbs for a wide range of conditions. The Greek physician Hippocrates referred to it as one of the twenty-first herbs and even suggested that it was the most important herb for healthy eyes. This gave way to its recognition as one of the world’s best medicinal herbs for a long time. It is now considered as an important ingredient in a vast number of popular herbal remedies, as well as in tonics, creams, and shampoos. For that reason, it is very hard to find someone who has not tried Aronia or at least heard of it.

In recent years, scientific research has revealed that the polyphenols present in Aronia are powerful antioxidants that may help reduce blood clots. Furthermore, these antioxidants may also help slow down aging-related processes. Aronia berries are an excellent source of antioxidants because it contains highly concentrated anthocyanins. Anthocyanins have a long lasting effect on the human body because they scavenge oxygen molecules that damage cells, resulting in death of harmful free radicals.

For years, scientists have studied the relationship between Antigen E (also known as ‘berry extract’) and aging. In human studies, the berries were shown to reduce the risk of developing diseases such as heart failure, diabetes, and certain forms of cancer. The study showed that the berries could extend life by up to 30 years.

There have also been human studies that suggest that the berries may be beneficial to humans. In a large clinical trial in Finland, people with elevated blood pressure were found to have significantly lower incidence when compared to people with normal blood pressure. It was also found that people who regularly consume the beverage are less likely to suffer from certain heart disease. In addition, another study conducted on mice showed that their bodies had more polyphenol-specific antioxidant activity than that of control animals. These results indicate that there may be a significant health benefits of consuming the beverage.

Currently, there is some research that indicates that there may be a positive correlation between Antigen E and prostate cancer. However, there is currently no evidence that Antigen E prevents the development of heart disease or other types of cancers. The lack of evidence may mean that the link between Antigen E and cancer may be due to contamination and the fact that human studies conducted on laboratory animals may not reflect human health after ingestion. Nevertheless, researchers are hopeful that further research will continue to increase the knowledge on Antigen E and its role in human health.

As more knowledge about Antigen E and the protective effects of its phytonutrients, we can expect to see further exciting research on this very promising food. Current studies have shown that there are significant antioxidant, anti-cancer, and heart health benefits of the fruit. Furthermore, chokeberries are probably more well-known for their rich source of antioxidants called polyphenols than any other type of berries. Although there are still a number of unanswered questions, these exciting findings may prove to be nothing short of groundbreaking in how we understand the nature of healthy aging.
